FORMER WORLD NUMBER one Tiger Woods was arrested and charged with driving under the influence this morning.

Woods, a resident of Jupiter Island in Florida, was arrested at 3am local time (8am Irish) according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

The 41-year old was released just before 11am local time.

Woods, a winner of 14 Majors, has not played competitive golf since the Omega Dubai Desert Classic in February.

He withdrew from that tournament after the first round because of continuing issues with his back and had a fourth surgery in three years on his back in April.

Woods revealed just last week he intended to return to competitive action soon, saying:

“I haven’t felt this good in years.

“As for returning to competitive golf, the long-term prognosis is positive.

“My surgeon and physiotherapist say the operation was successful.

It’s just a matter of not screwing up and letting it fuse. I’m walking and doing my exercises and taking my kids to and from school. All I can do is take it day by day. There’s no hurry.

“But I want to say unequivocally I want to play professional golf again.”
