WE’RE STILL NOT sure if Tomás Mulcahy actually wants the Cork senior hurling job.
There were mixed messages from the former Rebels ace on The Sunday Game last night when he was quizzed about the post vacated by Jimmy Barry-Murphy over the weekend.
While insisting that he was not denying the speculation linking him with the position, Mulcahy indicated that he wasn’t going to take it.
When asked by presenter Des Cahill if he would fancy the Leeside brief, Mulcahy came across decidedly coy.
“Go on, carry on! It all started here a couple of weeks ago with a bit of of a podcast, throwing out the rumours and stuff like that. You’ll be the first to know,” Mulcahy smiled.
“I’m not denying it whatsoever, being honest with you. I’ve said at some stage in my career I’d love to take on the Cork job but you’ll be the first to hear it. At this stage, it’s no for me to be honest with you, I’m not going to take the job.”
We’ll let you make up your own mind on Mulcahy’s intentions but we reckon he’s in the mix!
The Glen Rovers man paid a glowing tribute to departing JBM on the show.
“He owes nothing to Cork. He hurted badly after the Galway game, he felt there was more in the Cork team. He took a long time making his decision but he owes nothing to Cork hurling,” Mulcahy said.
“People will be critical over the last four years (but) they were 20 seconds from winning an All-Ireland against Clare, won a Munster title last year, disappointing in the All-Ireland semi-final against Tipperary but look, he’s brought on a lot of new players there, a lot of young talent and sometimes, if the players aren’t good enough or the squad isn’t good enough, there’s nothing a manager on the sideline can do.
“He got the Hall of Fame with the GAA, you see the list of honours, hurling, football, dual star, Allstars, minor All-Irelands with Cork, U21, the list is endless. Club All-Irelands with the ‘Barrs, hurling and football in both codes.
“He’s just an iconic figure in Cork, he’s JBM, he was always loved by the Cork supporters, eyes of blue, JBM, we’re looking after you.
“Stuff like that is just famous throughout Leeside. He’ll be disappointed the way it’s finished for him but he can walk away with his head held very high.”
