GOALS WERE KEY FOR UCD as they qualified for next week’s Sigerson Cup semi-final when they overcame UCC at the Mardyke in today’s quarter-final.

The opening exchanges had been even when a unfortunate own goal by UCC goalkeeper Micheál Martin put the visitors into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Even though Luke Connolly replied with goal from a penalty for the hosts, at half-time the score was 1-8 to 1-3 for UCD.

Billy Morgan’s team began the second half well, with Conor Cox kicking two points in quick succession and Luke Connolly on target with a long-range effort.

While UCD’s Jack McCaffrey responded with a point as he rounded off a well-worked move, UCC had the momentum.

Kerr yplayer Cox added a free and a lovely outside-of-the-boot shot to bring them to within a point with 20 minutes left as they trailed 1-9 to 1-8.

They couldn’t find a leveller, though, and Eoin Lowry gave UCD breathing space again, finishing to the net from close range after Conor McCarthy had found space.

That goal pricked UCC’s momentum and they would score just once more, Cox getting his sixth point with a free.

A lovely Niall Kelly point had UCC 2-11 to 1-9 in front with 10 minutes remaining and they wrapped things up as the excellent Paul Mannion’s shot was saved by Martin only to fall to McCarthy on the line, allowing him to tap in.
