Man United complete deal to make Swedish defender their first summer signing

Victor Lindelof moves to Old Trafford from Benfica.

MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE officially completed the transfer of defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica on a four-year contract.

The 22-year-old moves to Old Trafford after this afternoon completing a medical and agreeing personal terms for a fee reported to be €35 million.

Lindelof’s arrival is the club’s first piece of business in the transfer market during the close-season and the centre back will officially become a United player on 1 July.

“Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead of him at United,” Jose Mourinho said.

“Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer. I know that our fantastic group of players will welcome him as one of us.”

United announced on Saturday that they had agreed terms with Benfica regarding a transfer fee, and on Wednesday Lindelof put pen to paper on a long-term contract which also has the option for an extra year.

Lindelof said: “I am thrilled to be joining Manchester United. I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there. But I’m looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old Trafford and for Jose Mourinho. I’m keen to get started and make my contribution to the team’s efforts to win more trophies.”

Lindelof spent the majority of his youth career with hometown club Vasteras before joining Benfica in 2012. He went on to play 73 times for the Lisbon outfit and has also earned 12 caps for Sweden.

He leaves the Primeira Liga with three league titles to his name, along with two national cups, a league cup and a Portuguese Super Cup.

Lindelof is United’s first new signing of the summer as they build up towards a Champions League campaign next season.

They are also in the market for a striker, having included Zlatan Ibrahimovic, currently sidelined by a serious knee injury, on their list of players to be released.

Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata is one name linked with a move to Old Trafford. His agent said earlier this week that United had lodged a “very important offer” with the Spanish giants to try to bring him to Manchester.
