MANY ADMIRABLE IRISH people carried the Olympic flame aloft in Dublin yesterday morning – not least of which was the inspirational Mark Pollock.
The adventurer achieved many firsts in his athletic career – including becoming the first blind man to walk to the South Pole in 2009 – but broke his back in a fall a year later.
It hasn’t dampened his tremendous spirit though: just witness his joyful leg of today’s relay with the torch firmly grasped in his hand.

It’s strangely felt a little bit like a race … the nerves just like before any other race were building and suddenly it was just happening and the torch was there and getting lit with all the noise, you know? Part of it was making sure we didn’t mess up and the other part was trying to enjoy it.
