Ruby Walsh eases to victory aboard Douvan in the Paddy Power Cashcard Chase

It’s been a perfect start to the Leopardstown Christmas festival for Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh.

IT WAS AN easy win in the end for the Willie Mullins-trained Douvan who cruised to victory in the Paddy Power Cashcard Chase at the Leopardstown’s Christmas Festival today.

After trailing Alisier D’irlande in second position for much of the Grade One feature event, Ruby Walsh guided the 1/8 favourite into the lead. They glided over the final fence to claim Walsh’s third win of the day so far, with Sizing John coming in second.

Mullins then completed a four-timer in the the Future Champions Novice Hurdle, with Paul Townend steering the 9/2 Saturnas home ahead of Brelade.

Noble Endeavor clinched the Paddy Power Chase for Chris Jones and trainer Gordon Elliott, three and a half lengths ahead of The Crafty Butcher.

Speaking after the race, jockey Davy Russell said: “I thought I’d never win a Paddy Power (race) because of my weight. All credit goes to Chris and Gordon. It’s very difficult to win those big pots.”

Earlier in the day, Meri Devie marked her hurdling debut with a victory in the Paddy Power ‘Only 363 Days Till Christmas’ 3-Y-O Maiden Hurdle. The win puts the Willie Mullins-trained horse in good condition for the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Elsewhere, the 4/6 favourite Bacardys prevailed in the Paddy Power ‘Easiest To Use Mobile App’ Maiden Hurdle, seeing off stable companion Kolumbus by almost two lengths.
