Table toppers Old Belvedere and Terenure College cannot be separated
THERE WAS NOTHING to separate Old Belvedere and Terenure College in a fiercely-fought top of the table clash in the Energia All-Ireland League Men’s Division 1A.
A large crowd at Ollie Campbell Park witnessed leaders Belvedere build an early 14-0 lead, thanks to converted tries from James Dillon, via a Rob Russell pass, and Peter O’Beirne.
First-half yellow cards for Caspar Gabriel and Jordan Coghlan had Terenure under further pressure, but Oliver Coffey’s impressive side-stepping finish, coupled with a penalty try, saw them turn things around.
Aran Egan’s second penalty of the day made it 20-14 to Paul Barr’s side, only for Sam Wisniewski (63 minutes) and Justin Leonard (69) to cancel those kicks out and give ‘Belvo a share of the spoils.
Both teams had chances to win it late on, yet replacement Leonard miscued a penalty from distance, and Leinster starlet Gabriel’s monster last-gasp effort fell short of the posts.
Former Ulster winger Aaron Sexton started and finished the try scoring at Ballymacarn Park, as his brace helped Ballynahinch to overcome Cork Constitution 31-14 and move off the bottom of the table.
Sexton chased down Mark Best’s kick for a third-minute opener, and he bagged ‘Hinch’s bonus point with another speedy finish in the 82nd minute.
Clontarf fell out of the top four after losing 37-21 away to Lansdowne. Ciarán Mangan ran in two second-half tries for Rhys Ruddock’s men, who are sixth but just four points off the summit.
Mick O’Gara scored 15 points as St Mary’s College beat Young Munster 35-22. UCD are up to fourth after their 33-31 victory over Old Wesley. James Culhane and Andrew Osborne got amongst the tries.
Meanwhile, a Conor Galvin hat-trick was the centrepiece of Highfield‘s fine 40-31 defeat of Division 1B pacesetters Blackrock College.
The Cork outfit are now back up to second place, three points behind Naas whose attack flourished again in a 45-21 dismissal of Dublin University.
Winger Donal Conroy scored two of the Cobras‘ seven tries, while the division’s other Kildare club, MU Barnhall, pocketed an important five points against Instonians. Shane Mallon touched down twice as the Blue Bulls won 30-20.
Early tries from Ignacio Failla and Sam Cusack set Nenagh Ormond on their way to a 40-20 success against UCC.
Elsewhere, Ulster Development out-half Owen O’Kane kicked 10 points as City of Armagh saw off Garryowen 20-7 to move away from the bottom two.
