Old Belvedere edge tight battle with Clontarf
THE ENERGIA ALL-IRELAND League Men’s Divisions resumed this afternoon with a titanic top-of-the-table clash ending 11-7 in Old Belvedere’s favour.
Home advantage helped Belvedere to get over the line against Clontarf, as replacement George Hadden’s 61st-minute try sent them back to Division 1A’s summit.
The former Munster Academy prop barged over off a close-in ruck, aided by Calum Dowling’s latch. Sam Wisniewski missed the conversion, but had a valuable contribution with two first-half penalties.
Clontarf had cancelled out those kicks thanks to Dylan Donnellan’s sixth try of the season. He reached out for a 26th-minute grounding from close-range, rewarding ‘Tarf’s patient build-up play.
However, Hugh Hogan’s ‘Belvo side proved stronger over the remaining hour, and are now level on 15 points with Terenure College, who were 17-12 winners of the Dublin 6W derby at Templeville Road.
St Mary’s College, the defending champions, suffered their second successive defeat, despite Myles Carey athletically setting up an Aaron O’Sullivan try on the stroke of half-time.
That left Mary’s only 14-12 behind, and came just after Peter Sylvester had crashed over for ‘Nure. The visitors prevailed thanks to the only score of the second half, when Aran Egan split the posts following a 55th-minute scrum penalty.
Scalp
Elsewhere, Conor Rankin kicked 11 points as Ballynahinch opened their win account with a 21-17 victory over Lansdowne. UCD claimed the scalp of Cork Constitution, triumphing 18-13 with Charlie Molony and Maxim Aschenbrenner both crossing.
Old Wesley are two points outside of the top four after overcoming Young Munster 26-7. Replacements Rian Handley and Liam Grover supplied final-quarter tries, as Morgan Lennon’s men built momentum ahead of hosting Mary’s next weekend.
Meanwhile, just two points cover the leading four teams in Division 1B. Highfield are top of the pile having edged out MU Barnhall 17-15. Conor Galvin starred with two tries off the bench.
There were three other tight results, as a 76th-minute penalty try saw Garryowen win 25-23 at UCC, all four starting wingers scored tries during Blackrock College’s 19-17 win over City of Armagh, and Bevan Prinsloo was an 83rd-minute match winner for Instonians as they beat Naas 32-27.
Climbing up to second place, Dublin University bounced back from their heavy loss to Highfield with a standout 29-7 victory over Nenagh Ormond.
Trinity’s four tries all came in the first half, including a 39th-minute bonus point score from promising Ireland Under-19 forward Jonny Ginnety.
