Airtricity League wrap: Saints undone by Drogheda and Bohs see off Students

Gavin Brennan was on target at Richmond Park while Evan McMillan scored against his former club in the other game.

ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC slipped up in their bid to catch Sligo Rovers at Richmond Park this afternoon – going down 2-0 to Drogheda United.

The Saints, who progressed to the Europa League second round after a trip to Iceland on Thursday night, were hoping to close the seven-point gap on the league leaders after the Bit O’Red overcame Derry City on Friday.

Liam Buckley was without the injured Christy Fagan, Dean Kelly and Mark Rossiter while midfielder John Russell was serving a one-match ban, so midweek hero Stephen O’Flynn began up front on his own.

However, it was the visiting side who drew first blood. On 10 minutes, Drogheda’s Gavin Brennan capitalised on Barry Murphy’s poor clearance to fire home.

Mick Cooke’s side found themselves a man down shortly after half-time when Ryan Brennan was given a straight red for his bad tackle on James Chambers.

Pat’s threw on Anto Flood in search of a goal but went two behind when striker Peter Hynes redirected Derek Prednergast’s strike past sub keeper Brendan Clarke.

The result means Drogheda leapfrog today’s opponents into second place in the table.

At Dalymount, meanwhile, Bohemians got over their Europa League humiliation with a narrow win over UCD.

The only goal of the game arrived thanks to former Students defender Evan McMillan, who got on the end of Ryan McEvoy’s corner to head past Mark McGinley after 23 minutes of play.

Gypsies forward Dave Scully was given his marching orders for an incident off the ball with 14 minutes remaining but Aaron Callaghan’s men held out to move above Cork City into seventh place in the Premier Division.
