A statement from the FAI’s disciplinary committee this evening also confirmed that Waterford have been awarded a 3-0 result for the match Athlone failed to fulfill on Friday 3 June.

As a further punishment for Athlone, the next game between the sides on Friday 5 August – which was set to in Athlone – will instead be played at Waterford’s Regional Sports Centre and the south eastern club will be allowed to retain all gate receipts from the fixture.

The FAI statement also confirmed that the governing body has “ordered an independent review of Athlone Town in which an independent person will meet with all of the relevant stakeholders of Athlone Town to discuss and support the long-term future of the club, and this is an ongoing process.”
