Athlone Town clear up managerial situation after Twitter account is hacked

The First Division champions were left red-faced last night after Roddy Collins was told that a new manager was set to be appointed live on air.

ATHLONE TOWN SAY they have been forced to disable their Twitter account after it was hacked last night.

The Airtricity League First Division champions are  currently planning for next season and, surprisingly, advertised the position of first team manager last week despite Roddy Collins leading them to the title and promotion to the top tier.

Collins then expressed his surprise live on Newstalk’s Off The Ball after a tweet from the club’s official account read: “News on the appointment of the new manager tomorrow.”

However, they later revealed that the account had been “compromised” and added that the claim was untrue.

Speaking to TheScore this morning, club secretary David Dully attempted to clear up the incident.

“Our Twitter account was compromised last night,” he said. ”We changed the password and somebody tried to access it again this morning so we have disabled the account.
The last thing we want is for Roddy to be told anything live on air. That isn’t the way we do our business.”

On the managerial situation, Dully stated that a number of interviews will be conducted on Friday as a back-up plan in case Collins joins another side.

Reports suggest the former Bohemians and Monaghan United boss is in contention for a number of job including the vacant role at Derry City.

“The reason we are holding interviews is to have a Plan B as other clubs have come in and expressed an interest in Roddy. So we want to have a contingency plan.”
