Drogs riding high
AFTER THEIR 2-0 win over St Patrick’s Athletic on Sunday afternoon, the Premier Division table will make enjoyable reading for Drogheda United fans.
An awful clearance by Saints goalkeeper Barry Murphy gifted Gavin Brennan possession 15 yards out and the attacker had the presence of mind to slip it through Murphy’s legs before Peter Hynes added another at Richmond Park.
That result saw the Drogs leapfrog Pat’s into second place in the league and Mick Cooke’s side need to be commended for how they have gone about their business so far this season.

Do Sligo have another gear?
Another week in the Airtricity League, another win for Sligo Rovers. The Bit O’Red were expected to meet tough opposition in the shape of Derry City when they travelled up to the Brandywell on Friday night without top scorer Danny North. After a first half in which both sides cancelled each other out, the game came alive with Bit O’Red midfielder David Cawley driving the ball home from distance on 55 minutes.
Derry’s equaliser was well-worked but Sligo got the all-important winner as Mark Quigley, who was impressive on the night, got on the end of an excellent move which involved Pascal Millien, new boy Seamus Conneely and Romo Boco.
Ian Baraclough’s side are currently six points clear at the top but, as I mentioned last week, you do feel they have the ability to step up a gear or two and run away with the title this season.
Resilient Lilywhites
They may be in financial ruin and without a manager but, in front of a large crowd at Oriel Park on Friday, Dundalk showed their worth by holding Shamrock Rovers to a 1-1 draw. Gary Shanahan’s opener was cancelled out by Daryl Kavanagh but the Lilywhites weathered the storm in the second half and Chris Shields and Stephen McDonnell should have done better in front of goal after some quality counter attacking play.
There’s life in the Louth club yet and caretaker boss Darius Kearns will be delighted with that performance.
Kieran Marty Waters sees red
The Bray Wanderers winger has been one of their stand-out performers this year and scored a fine goal (his celebration wasn’t bad either) against Shelbourne at the Carlisle Grounds over the weekend. In the second half, however, he completely lost the head after being bundled over.
Waters first jumped to his feet and dived into a rash challenge on Stephen Hurley. Then, while in the process of receiving a yellow card from Neil Doyle, he shoved Gareth Matthews to the ground and deservedly was given his marching orders.
A man down, the Seagulls went on to concede late on and lose 3-2. Mindless stuff from Waters and no doubt he got an ear-bashing from Pat Devlin after the final whistle.
Bohs’ bouncebackability
Bohemians will want to forget last week’s embarrassing European exit at the hands of Thor Akureyri and, on Sunday afternoon, they got back to winning ways with a narrow victory over bottom club UCD.
Aaron Callaghan made eight changes to the team that began in Iceland and it was former Student defender Evan Millan who proved the difference with his first goal for the club.
The Gypsies had striker David Scully sent off (for the third time this season!) but managed to hold out to move above Cork City and level with Derry on 22 points.
