BATH HAVE AGREED a short-term deal with Japan international Amanaki Mafi that will see him join the Aviva Premiership club until the end of the season.
Mafi was one of the stars of the Rugby World Cup for Japan as they recorded victories over South Africa, Samoa and United States, with the back-row forward scoring two tries in his four appearances.
His impressive displays in the pack have convinced Bath to bring him in from the end of January – when the Japanese domestic season finishes – strengthening their squad for the second half of the campaign.
“Amanaki is a talented young player who had a great Rugby World Cup, and we’re excited to see what he can do in a Bath jersey,” Bath head coach Mike Ford told the club’s official website.
“We have some very good players in our back row already, but we’re always looking to strengthen the squad, and Amanaki will give us another option in a hugely competitive position.”
Mafi, a 25-year-old who was born in Tonga, is looking forward to the new challenge, and hopes to shine under Ford’s guidance.
“I’m really looking forward to arriving at Bath,” he said. “They are a very compelling side to watch play, and I know that joining them will be the best environment for me to continue developing my game. ”
