IMMEDIATELY AFTER AIDEN McGeady’s stunning late winner for Ireland against Georgia yesterday, a few knees jerked so severely in TheScore.ie office that a couple of desks flipped over.
Immediately after we tidied up the strewn stationery and computers, someone legitimately asked whether McGeady’s magical turn and precise shot was Ireland’s greatest ever international goal?

Of course, you are entitled to say “settle down lads, there have been plenty of better goals than that, baby!”, but what are they? And were any of them better than yesterday’s?
For the purpose of the debate, we are taking context out of it completely. We are judging goals solely on their aesthetic value and not factoring in their importance.
Here are a few that could challenge McGeady’s:
Ronnie Whelan vs USSR in 1988
Mark Kennedy vs Yugoslavia in 1999
Jason McAteer vs Netherlands in 2001
Liam Miller vs Sweden in 2006 (last goal in video)
But we want to here from you. What do you think is Ireland’s greatest international goal? Has there every been one better than McGeady’s? Leave your choice in the comments below, but don’t bother recommending a free kick; our stock as a footballing nation would plummet ever further if our greatest ever goal didn’t come from open play.
