BOHEMIANS’ 22-YEAR-OLD GOALKEEPER James Talbot has been named SSE Airtricity League/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland Player of the Month for April.
After some glittering performances for the Gypsies between the posts of late, Talbot’s excellent form has been recognised accordingly.
Since joining the club in the off-season, he has been a revelation for the Dubliners, filling Shane Supples’ boots since his retirement due to injury.
It was originally expected that the ex-Sunderland youth player and Home Farm schoolboy would come as competition for Supple — but Talbot has taken the reins in expert fashion despite his inexperience in senior football.
He conceded just one goal in April — a Patrick Hoban penalty — and clocked up six clean sheets as Bohs keep the pressure on Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers at the top of the table.
“I could possibly say I’m surprised to win the award but it’s good to get acknowledged when you’re doing well personally and as a collective,” the youngster said.
“I’m really happy with my start as I have worked hard with Benno (goalkeeping coach Chris Bennion) from day one and he has helped me to come on leaps and bounds.
“That said, I’m in no way sitting comfortable as I need to work harder to get the best out of myself.”
He beat team-mate and U21 international Daniel Mandroiu and Dundalk attacker Michael Duffy to the monthly accolade. They finished second and third respectively.
“Dano has serious talent,” Talbot added. “The things he does in training are ridiculous and he is a great lad, which is an added bonus.
“He put in some unbelievable performances in April, so I’m surprised he didn’t win.”
