Injury scare for Tipp hurlers a fortnight out from Cork clash as 'Bonner' Maher damages hamstring

The All-Star centre forward picked up the injury on club duty yesterday.

PATRICK ‘Bonner’ Maher has emerged as an injury doubt for Tipperary ahead of their Munster SHC quarter-final against Cork on Sunday week, 21 May.

Maher, who recently rejoined the panel following a six-month peackeeping stint with the Army in Syria, pulled up with a hamstring injury in the 36th minute of his club Lorrha-Dorrha’s North divisional championship defeat against Templederry Kenyons yesterday.

All-Star Maher had netted Lorrha’s goal at the end of the first half but, according to onlookers, he was injured while contesting a challenge on the stand side of MacDonagh Park, Nenagh.

Maher, 27, immediately signalled for attention and was withdrawn, with initial reports suggesting a hamstring strain.

Further tests will determine the severity of the injury, and Tipperary manager Michael Ryan could be in a position to deliver an update when he speaks with the media at today’s Munster GAA championship launch in Killarney.

Corner back Donagh Maher, meanwhile, did not feature for Burgess in their North championship victory over Portroe in Nenagh.

Maher missed the concluding stages of the Allianz League campaign with a hamstring injury and would ideally have liked game time with his club in an attempt to force his way into Ryan’s plans for Cork’s visit to Semple Stadium in less than a fortnight.
