LIVERPOOL DIRECTOR OF football Damien Comolli believes the club’s triumph in the Carling Cup can help attract top players to Anfield.

The Merseyside giants won their first trophy in six years thanks to a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Cardiff, following a 2-2 draw after extra time. Frenchman Comolli, formerly a sporting director at Tottenham  Hotspur, is confident the triumph on Sunday, and the Europa League qualification that goes with it, can kick-start sustained success at Liverpool.

“We already know that there are big players who want to join us next summer because they believe in the project,” Comolli told Sky Sports. ”Everybody in Europe knows what Liverpool football club are trying to do.”

“Obviously the fact that we’re back playing in Europe and we’ve won the trophy, it’s all positive things. There’s a very positive vibe around the club around Europe. A lot players I know are very interested about joining the project because it’s a very interesting project.”
