Recent champions set to clash after Mayo senior quarter-final draw is made

2015 champions Castlebar Mitchels will take on 2012 kingpins Ballaghaderreen.

TWO RECENT CHAMPIONS will clash at the quarter-final stage of the Mayo senior football championship after the last eight draw was made this afternoon.

The identity of the eight quarter-finalists was confirmed after the group stage games concluded yesterday.

Castlebar Mitchels, the champions in 2013 and 2015, will take on Ballaghaderreen, who lifted the title in 2012. The game will see Mayo team-mates like Barry Moran and Patrick Durcan up against Andy Moran. Castlebar Mitchels have been a strong force in recent years, contesting the 2014 and 2016 All-Ireland senior club finals.

Elsewhere last year’s beaten finalists Breaffy – who have the three O’Shea brothers and Robert Hennelly in their ranks – will face Crossmolina.

2014 winners Ballintubber – the club of Cillian and Diarmuid O’Connor and Alan Dillon – have been paired with Garrymore.

The last quarter-final will be contested by Knockmore and Aghamore with county seniors like Kevin McLoughlin and Brendan Harrison all in action here.

The intermediate quarter-finals will involve key Mayo senior players like Lee Keegan (Westport) and Jason Doherty (Burrishoole) while Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis), Stephen Coen (Hollymount-Carramore) and Donal Vaughan (Ballinrobe) will all be involved in senior relegation playoffs.
