AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Real Madrid v Bayern Munich, Champions League quarter-final second leg

We had extra-time in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid win 4-2 after extra-time (6-3 on aggregate)

IN TWO-AND-a-half hours’ time (barring extra-time and penalties), we should know the first two clubs into this season’s Champions League semi-finals.

In the Spanish capital, holders Real Madrid hold a narrow 2-1 advantage over German heavyweights Bayern Munich, while their city rivals Atleti have travelled to England, where they are 1-0 up on the Premier League’s surprise package Leicester City.

With only a single goal separating the ties, both games should be well worth following.

Team news from the Santiago Bernabeu:

There’s one change for the home side, with Isco in for the injured Gareth Bale.

For Bayern, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng have passed fitness tests to start at centre-half, while Javi Martinez is suspended. Top striker Lewandowski also returns to give Carlo Ancelotti a boost as he prepares to faces his former club once again.

Real Madrid: Navas, Carvajal, Ramos, Nacho, Marcelo, Casemiro, Kroos, Modric, Isco, Benzema, Ronaldo.

Bayern Munich: Neuer, Hummels, Boateng, Lahm, Alaba, Vidal, Alonso, Robben, Thiago, Ribery, Lewandowski.

And here are the starting line-ups from the King Power Stadium:

Foxes skipper Wes Morgan is back after missing the past month due to a back injury and takes the place of Robert Huth, who is suspended.

Atleti boss Diego Simeone has gone for Belgian international Yannick Carrasco in attack alongside Antoine Griezmann with Fernando Torres on the bench.

Leicester City: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan, Benalouane, Fuchs, Albrighton, Ndidi, Drinkwater, Mahrez,Vardy, Okazaki.

Atletico Madrid: Oblak, Juanfran, Godin, Savic, Filipe, Koke, Gabi, Gimenez, Saul, Carrasco, Griezmann.

As usual, we want your predictions…

So, which two sides are going through tonight?

Cristiano Ronaldo’s double in the first leg saw the Portuguese superstar reach 100 European goals. He is also on 97 Champions League goals so a hat-trick tonight would make it a century.

Here are the scenes at both grounds thanks to BT Sport. We’re about to kick-off…

And we’re underway… Both matches are off and running.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich – Isco robs Xabi Alonso of possession and play in finds out Ronaldo but he’s snuffed out. Bayern turn defence into attack and win a corner, and Thiago’s set-piece is cleared away. It’s been a frantic start with a number of loose passes already.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich – Vidal, Bayern’s best player in the first leg, has picked up an early booking after fouling Isco following superb link-up play involving Ronaldo. That yellow card puts him out of the semi-final first leg if they’re to progress.

Ronaldo steps up to take the free-kick, but smashes it off the wall.

Leicester City 0-0 Atletico Madrid – It’s been a positive start from the Foxes, and Okazaki’s ball over the top nearly finds the run of Vardy but it’s slightly over-hit.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich - A great bit of play from the visitors down the left as Alaba finds Ribery. The Frenchman cuts the ball back to Thiago but Marcelo gets his body in front of the close-range shot to keep it out.

Leicester City 0-0 Atletico Madrid – Carrasco finds himself in possession inside the Leicester box, and he looks to pick out Griezmann in a central area. Simpson tracks his marker, however, and cuts out the pass — conceding a corner.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich – Vidal has a pop from 25 yards but it’s slightly too high and sails over.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich – It’s been encouraging from the Bavarians during the first 15 minutes.

Leicester City 0-0 Atletico Madrid – The King Power Stadium roars as the Foxes win a corner. It comes to nothing but there appears to be a belief there.

Moments later, Mahrez and Vardy link up to tee up Okazaki and the Japanese forward shoots wide. That’s been their best chance so far.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich – That’s a decent chance for Madrid. Marcelo whips the ball into a central area and Benzema makes contact but can’t direct his header on target.

Leicester City 0-0 Atletico Madrid – A brilliant run from Mahrez straight through the middle, but the Algerian delays his pass slightly and Vardy strays offside.

GOAL! Leicester City 0-1 Atletico Madrid (Saul Niguez)

The Spaniards go in front and it’s a super finish. Filipe Luis sends the ball to the back post and Saul gets a strong header on it to beat Schmeichel.

That’s devastating for Leicester, who need 3-0 to go through now.

Leicester City 0-1 Atletico Madrid – Mahrez catches a volley well, but it’s straight into the arms of Oblak.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich – Nicely-worked from Madrid, which tees up Kroos for the shot. The German curls it well over and should really do better from there.

Ronaldo then drives at the Bayern defence and fires at Neuer when it looked a smart move to pass.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich – This game has been end-to-end stuff. Bayern win a free-kick but Alaba blazes way over. Casemiro has just picked up a yellow card too.

As I write that, Madrid break in numbers on the counter-attack and the ball is played to Ronaldo, who shanks his shot off-target.

Half-time scores:

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich (2-1 on aggregate)
Leicester City 0-1 Atletico Madrid (0-2 on aggregate)

Ireland manager Martin O’Neill is on the BT Sport panel for the Leicester – Atleti game. What’s his advice…?

Just go for it, don’t die wondering.”

The former Foxes manager also said he’d bring Demarai Gray on.

Second half — We’re back in Madrid and Leicester.

Leicester City 0-1 Atletico Madrid – The hosts win an early corner and, when it comes out, Drinkwater shoots into the crowd behind the goal.

Real Madrid 0-0 Bayern Munich – Vidal is walking a tight-rope here. The physical Chilean midfielder crashes into Casemiro and concedes a free-kick on the edge of the box. He’s already on a booking and another one of them is likely to earn him a red.

The free-kick does amount to anything, but it isn’t long before Real Madrid create a good opportunity — Isco sending a volley just past the post.

PENALTY TO BAYERN! Casemiro catches Robben inside the box and the Dutchman is always going to go down. Good decision from the referee.

GOAL! Real Madrid 0-1 Bayern Munich (Robert Lewandowski)

The away side have found a breakthrough! It’s cool-as-you-like from Lewandowski, who gives Navas the eyes and sends his spot-kick down the middle.

That’s 2-2 on aggregate now and Bayern need one more to go through.

Here’s that late tackle from Casemiro… silly challenge to make.

Casemiro

GOAL! Leicester City 1-1 Atletico Madrid (Jamie Vardy)

And there’s a lifeline! The ball is crossed and a deflected shot from Chiswell falls to Vardy. The striker makes no mistake to fire high into the net.

Leicester must score two more and they’ve a half-hour to do it.

Leicester City 1-1 Atletico Madrid – Ulloa and Vardy both have great opportunities to score, but Atleti get bodies in front to make vital blocks.

And here comes Fernando Torres for Carrasco.

Lampard scored for Chelsea in their quarter-final second leg win over Benfica five years ago. As we all remember, they went on to win the competition that year.

Real Madrid 0-1 Bayern Munich – A couple of Real Madrid substitutions to report with Marco Asensio coming on for Benzema and Lucas Vazquez replacing Isco. Xabi Alonso has been booked too.

Carvajal breaks through the middle and, with options left and right, he goes it alone. The tackle comes in and their chance is gone.

Real Madrid 0-1 Bayern Munich – Alonso has been replaced by Thomas Muller, who’s generally a good man for a goal.

GOAL! Real Madrid 1-1 Bayern Munich (Cristiano Ronaldo)

The holders have scored! Boetang fails to pick up Ronaldo and he heads home from a fine Casemiro pass.

That’s 3-2 on aggregate to Madrid.

GOAL! Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich (Sergio Ramos own goal)

What the…? How has that even gone in?? A minute after Ronaldo’s goal, his team-mate Ramos comically puts the ball into his own net.

We’re all-square at 3-3 on aggregate and this one is going to extra-time as it stands.

Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich – Red card for Bayern! And it’s that man Vidal. The challenge isn’t a terrible one, but that’s one too many fouls from the midfielder and he’s off.

Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich – Now down to 10 men, Lewandowski is withdrawn for Joshua Kimmich.

Leicester City 1-1 Atletico Madrid – Just one minute of normal time and whatever is given additionally left here, so it looks like Leicester are going out.

Full-time scores:

Leicester City 1-1 Atletico Madrid — The Foxes go out, losing 2-1 on aggregate.

Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich — 3-3 on aggregate after 90-plus minutes and we’re heading to extra-time.

Extra-time: Here we go again, another 30 minutes of football in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich – As you would expect, Real Madrid are looking the most likely to score with the extra man.

Neuer saves from Ronaldo, then Marcelo drives a shot wide with Ronaldo in an offside position.

Bayern then go up the other end and substitute Douglas Costa isn’t far away with his strike.

Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich – Asensio shoots and Neuer makes a fingertip stop.

GOAL! Real Madrid 2-2 Bayern Munich (Cristiano Ronaldo)

4-3 to Madrid on aggregate and it’s their main man. Ramos puts the ball into a central area and Ronaldo chests before beating Neuer.

Replays show he was offside, but it’s been given.

Extra-time half-time: Real Madrid 2-2 Bayern Munich

GOAL! Real Madrid 3-2 Bayern Munich (Cristiano Ronaldo)

That’s the hat-trick. A simple tap-in after good work from Marcelo. 100 goals in the Champions League now. Incredible.

GOAL! Real Madrid 4-2 Bayern Munich (Marco Asensio)

The young substitute gets in on the act — walking past Hummels and shooting low. Bayern have fallen apart in extra-time and that’s now 6-3 on aggregate.

Full-time (aet): Real Madrid 4-2 Bayern Munich (6-3 on aggregate)
