Charles Aranguiz batters home one of the World Cup's best penalties in losing cause

The ball would have set off into orbit had it not thundered into the roof of the Brazilian net.

BRAZIL ADVANCED TO the quarter-final of the World Cup after coming out on top, 3-2, in a tense penalty shoot-out at Belo Horizonte.

While the Chileans were ultimately left to rue three missed spot-kicks, striker Charles Aranguiz can look back at the shoot-out with personal satisfaction. Aranguiz tittered three steps forward before unleashing his penalty into the top right-hand corner, leaving Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar rooted to the spot.

Aranguiz’ effort was very similar to the blockbuster delivered by Sheffield Wednesdsay goalkeeper during a 1995 penalty shoot-out against Wolves.
