More misery for Crystal Palace as Christian Benteke faces injury lay-off

The club’s top striker is set to be ruled out for up to six weeks due to a knee problem.

CRYSTAL PALACE’S CHANCES of rescuing their poor start to the season have been dealt a huge blow following the news that Christian Benteke is out for up to six weeks.

The Belgian striker limped off during his side’s 5-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, and it was later revealed that he would be unable to recover in time for the trip to Old Trafford this weekend.

Manager Roy Hodgson has since confirmed that the record-signing player faces a long stint on the sidelines.

He’s (Benteke) got ligament damage which will keep him out for a minimum of six weeks. We don’t think he’ll be able to train for six weeks,” he said.

Palace have yet to register a single point since the start of the new Premier League season, with the loss to City marking their heaviest defeat of the campaign so far.

They will struggle to replace Benteke for their upcoming fixtures, with back-up striker Connor Wickham still working his way back from a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Wilfried Zaha is also still recovering from a knee problem, while on-loan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is also unavailable due to a thigh strain.

Palace bought Benteke from Liverpool for £27m last year, and he has gone on to score 15 goals in 42 games.
