Confirmed: Vidic out for the rest of the season
Alex Ferguson says Serb centre-half will not play again in this campaign.

A BAD WEEK for Manchester United, just got a lot worse.

Manager Alex Ferguson has confirmed this morning, in his Friday press conference, that Nemanja Vidic is out for the rest of the season.

The Serb centre half left the pitch with a knee injury during the shock defeat to Basle on Wednesday; a result which cost the Premier League champions their place in the Champions League.

Old Trafford chiefs remained silent on Vidic’s prognosis until Ferguson revealed the news this morning.

“It’s not unexpected but it’s still bad news. We thought it was a bad one and unfortunately he’s out for the season. He sees the specialist on Monday to work out the progress of when he has his operation. It won’t be immediately as we have to let the swelling come down. It’s a blow,” the Scot told reporters at Carrington.

Last night the player’s agent signalled the outlook was not good.

“Unfortunately he has suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament,” Silvano Martina told Italian site calciomercato.

The news is another major blow to the side’s hopes of retaining their title after injuries throughout the team’s spine, to the likes of Javier Hernandez and Tom Cleverley.’s sporting Advent calendar, day 9
