CORK CITY MADE it seven points from three games as they were far too strong for Bray Wanderers in front of 2,750 at Turner’s Cross tonight.
After John Kavanagh’s 18th-minute opener had put the hosts ahead, they rarely looked uncomfortable and victory was assured when Billy Dennehy converted a penalty midway through the second half.
Cork began brightly, with Dennehy, Garry Buckley and Colin Healy all doing well in midfield, and the opening goal was brilliantly worked. Hard-working centre-forward Mark O’Sullivan chested a pass into Buckley’s path and then he set Dennehy away, with Kavanagh on hand to divert his low cross in at the near post.
O’Sullivan almost made it two before half-time, touching a Gearoid Morrissey pass beyond goalkeeper Shane Redmond, who had come off his line, but defenders David Webster and Niall Cooney ensured that he couldn’t guide the ball in.
Nevertheless, Bray were unable to do little at the other end, Shane Byrne and Graham Kelly coming closest, and in the 67th minute City wrapped things up.
Good work from Healy and Buckley saw sub Rob Lehane played in and when he was pushed by Cooney, referee Derek Tomney pointed to the spot, with Dennehy sending Redmond the wrong way from the spot kick.
With five minutes left, Buckley capped his fine performance with the third goal, half-volleying home when found unmarked from Healy’s cross. David Scully got a late consolation for Bray.
