Superb Rebels deserved winners over Hoops in top-of-the-table clash

The 5,676 who showed up to Turner’s Cross were treated to a 3-0 home win over Shamrock Rovers.

Cork City 3

Shamrock Rovers 0

CORK CITY ARE the new outright leaders of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division following a dismantling of Shamrock Rovers at Turner’s Cross tonight.

With the sides level on 10 points each after four games going into this clash, most of the home supporters would probably have taken a point before kick-off, but by the end they were singing that they were top of the league and they were having a laugh.

They were more than entitled to, as this was a top-class display from John Caulfield’s side. From the start, they went for this and they were handsomely rewarded, in front of 5,676 people.

Billy Dennehy opened the scoring in the 14th minute, poking home the rebound after Barry Murphy had saved Garry Buckley’s header following good work by Liam Kearney and Mark O’Sullivan, and the chances continued to come.

Kearney had the best chance, denied by a great Murphy save, and while it remained 1-0 at half-time, it took just eight second-half minutes for them to double the lead.

This time it was O’Sullivan who scored, heading home Dennehy’s cross when found free at the back post, and Dennehy’s brother Darren got the third.

He was in the right place to convert a Colin Healy cross after a corner hadn’t been cleared, and with the points safe, it was time for Cork to enjoy themselves.
