WESTMEATH’S TALISMANIC ATTACKER Dessie Dolan is battling to be on board for the county’s football side for the 2014 season.
Despite a recurring hamstring injury, 34 year-old Dolan is in the plans of new manager Paul Bealin as the Midlands county get set for action.
Dolan is currently in the midst of a rehab programme but Bealin believes the long-serving forward’s experience will be a key asset for the county.

“Dessie’s a recurring injury with his hamstring that breaks down every six to eight weeks during training sessions and with his own club Garrycastle as well.
“We got him assessed in Santry, we got a 3D camera to have a look at his hamstring to see if there was a weakness there and it came through really positive.
“He’s doing a rehab programme right now and if we can get him fit – he’s actually very fit anyway – but if we can get him strong, I think he can play a part. He’s a player that Westmeath need in terms of experience.
“My fear is that if he pushes it and the injury goes again, that will be challenging around it. But all the news that he’s got back from the medical side of it has been positive.
“He’s actually doing a strength and conditioning programme with the same strength and conditioning coach that I have and he’s got his own gym so Dessie goes up to him in Dublin. We won’t parachute him into the squad.
“The squad knows he’s doing a rehab programme and if he’s right in three to four weeks’ time and my coach says and he feels he’s ready to go we’ll take a view on it then.”
