Joe Hart (Man City): Made some excellent saves to keep City in the game early on, playing an integral role in their progression ultimately.

Fabian Schär (Basel): Big things are expected of the 22-year-old, and he lived up to the hype with a commanding display as his side advanced at the expense of Liverpool.

Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid): Produced a solid performance and marshalled the defence well, as the Spanish side got the 0-0 draw they needed against Juve to finish top of the group.

Aymen Abdennour (Monaco): Scored the opening goal and kept a clean sheet, as Monaco overcame Zenit and reached the last 16 in the process.

Gareth Bale (Real Madrid): Caused countless problems for Ludogorets and headed home powerfully, with Real Madrid consequently earning their 19th consecutive win.

Joao Moutinho (Monaco): Made an assist and generally produced a tidy performance in Monaco’s 2-0 win.

Fabian Frei (Basel): Often dictated the play in midfield and scored a fabulous goal to boot, as Basel gained an all-important draw with Liverpool.

Samir Nasri (Man City): Scored and made a goal, and generally provided creative cutting edge in attack for Man City.

Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal): Claimed a magnificent brace and generally stood out in Arsenal’s win over Galatasaray.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona): Another satisfactory night for Barca’s main man — his goal and assist proved decisive as they secured top spot against PSG.

Lasse Schöne (Ajax): Got a brace as Ajax claimed a 4-0 win over APOEL to secure Europa League football.
