DIDIER DROGBA WAS involved in a heated exchange of views with opposing fans after his Montreal Impact side suffered a 1-0 defeat to New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
Montreal have won just once in their eight most recent MLS outings, but Drogba’s form has been particularly poor, with the former Chelsea striker scoring only three times in his last 17 appearances.
After Saturday’s loss, Drogba confronted a couple of Red Bulls supporters who had reportedly been heckling the 38-year-old Ivorian throughout the game at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.
Stadium security were forced to intervene and separate Drogba, as well as a member of Montreal Impact’s backroom staff, from the two supporters.
“There were two fans who were showing their enthusiasm a little too much. They crossed the line a bit, that’s all,” Drogba told TVA Sports.
According to The Telegraph, the two Red Bulls supporters are twin brothers Vince and Vance Moss — “both accomplished and well-respected Army doctors” — who claim they were merely annoyed by Drogba’s refusal to sign autographs.
Vince Moss said: “When he was walking off the field [on Saturday] and we hear a number of Red Bulls fans asking for his autograph and he just walked off, our question was, ‘Why don’t you greet the fans?’
“We were saying, ‘Don’t be a sore loser’ — we were both saying that. We were saying, ‘Why don’t you sign some autographs?’ But he wouldn’t do it, he just walked off.
“We thought that wasn’t very nice and we told him that and, as he was walking off, he basically said he did what he wanted to do. We said, ‘That’s not very nice’ and that’s when he turned around and ran up the stairs and told us to be respectful.”
