DUBLIN HURLER PETER Kelly has avoided a cruciate injury but is still set for spell on the sidelines after a suspected dislocated knee in a club game last Friday night.
Kelly was in action for his club Lucan Sarsfields in a league game against St Pat’s Palmerstown when he suffered the injury.
There were fears that he had torn his cruciate but Dublin boss Ger Cunningham revealed yesterday that thankfully that scenario has been dispelled for Kelly, an Allstar winner in 2013.
“From what I can gather, it’s a suspected dislocated knee,” stated Cunningham at the launch of the AIG Fenway Hurling Classic in Croke Park yesterday.
“There’s some cartilage damage but it’s not a cruciate. He got the scan done straight away. There was a lot of swelling on the knee. So it just needed to come down.
“(I) just got a call earlier on from the medical guys to say that that’s the prognosis. “I know he was in a lot of pain and anything to do with the knee, you’d obviously be a bit concerned.
“Your worst thoughts would be a cruciate. Thankfully it’s not. A dislocated might or might not need an operation.”
Dublin teammate Simon Lambert also hurt his knee in a recent club game but he has not sustained serious damage. Cunningham admits the out of season timing of Kelly’s injury does help.
“Any time you get an injury, especially one as serious as that, it takes a time to recover. Overall, it’s a blow and a pity for him but the time of year, it gives him a chance to get back.”
