Dublin Super Cup: Victory for City

Manchester City are up and running at the Dublin Super Cup with a 3-0 win over an Airtricity League XI.

MANCHESTER CITY GOT off to a winning start in the Dublin Super Cup on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over an Airtricity League XI selection.

How it Happened: Shaun Wright-Phillips got the game’s first goal on 52 minutes with an incredible first-time finish from a high ball in over the top of the Irish side’s defence.

Man of the match Adam Johnson doubled the Premier League team’s advantage eight minutes later with a fine finish, before Joe Gamble – on as a substitute – missed a relatively easy chance to get the hosts back into the contest.

Derry City star James McClean had another chance scooped away from his head five minutes later before the match was finally settled with a third score – this time from the boot of substitute Luca Scapuzzi.

Key Man: A busy afternoon for Johnson, who scored one and set up another for his side.

What’s next: Damien Richardson will be happy enough with his team’s performance. Without players from Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers and St. Patrick’s Athletic, they put in an organised and resolute display and did create opportunities to score. For City, their biggest challenge lies ahead tomorrow – in the form of a clash with Inter Milan.
