'Binge drinking was my problem, not cocaine' admits Dustin Johnson as he prepares to return to golf

The American could return from a six-month sabbatical in a couple of weeks.

DUSTIN JOHNSON HAS spoken publicly for the first time since he was reportedly suspended from the PGA Tour for testing positive for drugs, insisting he does not have a cocaine problem.

In July, the American said he was taking a leave of absence from golf to address ‘personal challenges’ despite widespread reports suggesting he had failed his third drug test and was banned for six months.

The PGA Tour denied the claims at the time and now, as he prepares to return to the fairways, Johnson has opened up about his off-course issues.

“I did not have a problem,” he told Sports Illustrated.”I have issues. But that’s not the issue.

“I would drink and drink to excess. I don’t miss waking up with a hangover, and I didn’t drink very often. It was just when I did it was a little too much.”

The 30-year-old revealed he didn’t go to rehab but instead hired a team of experts including a life coach.

Johnson, who is an eight-time PGA Tour winner, missed last year’s Ryder Cup in Gleneagles but is set to make a comeback at next month’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines or the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
