Chacarra wins fourth DP World Tour title in India as McKibbin earns top-10 finish
RED-HOT SPANIARD EUGENIO Chacarra won his fourth DP World Tour title on Sunday with a two-shot victory at the weather-hit tournament in New Delhi.
Chacarra, who won the Dutch Open and the 83 Open d’Italia in June and Indian Open last year, finished on 21-under at Delhi Golf Club.
A teary-eyed Chacarra dedicated the win to his grandfather, who died 10 days earlier, saying: “He is watching me somewhere from up there.”
Tom McKibbin finished in a share of ninth after a final round of three-under 69 which featured five birdies including two in a row on the 17th and 18th holes.
The Hollywood man signed off on 12-under, nine shots off Chacarra.
Shane Lowry also carded a three-under 69 in his final round to leave him in a share of 15th on 10-under.
Six-time major champion Rory McIlroy, who had been in the hunt after the weather-disrupted first two days, finished tied 42nd at four-under.
Chacarra’s victory moves him up to the top of the Race to Dubai rankings, overtaking Patrick Reed, who finished on eight-under. McIlroy, who is bidding to win the Race to Dubai title for a record-equalling eighth time, is currently in third place.
“I know it’s not going to be easy,” Chacarra said of his Race to Dubai chances.
“Rory in Dubai always plays good and I know it’s going to be a big battle. Patrick, too. Two of the best players in the world coming for me now, and I know they’re not going to make it easy.”
The 26-year-old Chacarra carded a final-round two-under-par 70 and pumped his fist in the air to celebrate his third win on the European tour this season.
New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier was second on 19-under and Chacarra’s fellow Spaniard Angel Hidalgo and Poland’s Adrian Meronk were tied third on 15-under.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood, the defending champion, finished tied fifth at 13-under.
With the tournament playing catch-up, Chacarra completed his third round in the morning to extend his sole lead.
He kept up the charge in the final round with three birdies against one bogey.
Meanwhile, Leona Maguire and Lauren Walsh enjoyed strong final rounds at the Buick LPGA Shanghai.
Maguire recovered from a 77 in difficult conditions on Saturday to finish with a 69 that leaves her in a share of 22nd place on two-over. The Cavan native had no bogeys on the final day and picked up three birdies in all.
It was a similar story for Walsh, who bounced back from 78 in the third round to a final round of 68 which included six birdies. She takes a share of 51st on 10-over.
Home hero Yin Ruoning celebrated back-to-back LPGA Tour titles with a thrilling one-stroke victory in Shanghai.
China’s Yin carded a final-round four-under-par 68 at an energised Sheshan Golf Club to emerge victorious from a showdown with overnight leader Choi Hye-jin.
The 24-year-old Yin, winner at the FM Championship in Boston in August on her previous start on tour, finished on 11-under, one shot clear of Choi.
Pádraig Harrington is in action on the Champions Tour at the SAS Championship. Harrington is in a share of 37th place after rounds of 71 and 75 to leave him on two-over at the Prestonwood Country Club in North Carolina. American Tim O’Neal leads on six-under heading into the final round.
