IT WAS A difficult morning for Ireland’s marathon participants in this morning’s European Athletics Championships action in Birmingham.
In the men’s marathon, Paul O’Donnell was unfortunately the only of Ireland’s three representatives to reach the finish line, ending the race in 43rd position with a time of 2.20.41.
Sadly Ryan Creech was unable to begin the race at all, while David McGlynn was forced to bow out after 25km.
In the women’s marathon, Fionnuala McCormack’s morning came to an end shortly after the 10km mark.

Both races saw new championship records broken. Eritrean-born German Amanal Petros, the Olympic silver medallist, claimed victory in the men’s race with a time of 2.09.11, beating Belgian Koen Naert’s previous best set in Berlin in 2018.
Finland’s Alisa Vainio, who finished fifth at last year’s world champs in Tokyo, clocked a dominant winning time of 2:22.26, her long solo effort beating the previous championship record by almost three minutes.
