Fergie backs Capello in John Terry captaincy row

The Manchester United boss says his fellow manager should be able to say what he likes…

MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER Alex Ferguson felt that Fabio Capello was well within his rights to criticise the FA over John Terry’s axing as England captain.

On Sunday, Capello revealed that he ‘absolutely’ did not agree with the decision to strip Terry – who faces a trial next July over alleged racial slurs against QPR’s Anton Ferdinand – of the captaincy.

The BBC reports that Ferguson backs the Italian, saying, “there’s nothing wrong with having an opinion.

“I think what will happen in the next few days is there will have to be a coming together of the FA hierarchy and Fabio Capello because he’s the team manager, he has the importance of that position.

“Without question the most important person at a football club is the manager.”

In fact, The Guardian is reporting that FA chairman David Bernstein will meet Capello this week in an attempt to diffuse any potential row. The FA have not pored over the terms of Capello’s contract to see if his comments were in breach, and are said to be keen to move on while remaining steadfast on the decision to remove Terry.
