1994 Connaught Final
Leitrim 0-12 Mayo 2-4
IT’S LIKELY MAYO man and Fine Gael TD John O’Mahony could still walk into any pub in Leitrim and not have to put his hand in his pocket.
Leitrim’s victory masterminded by O’Mahony over his native Mayo was the greatest victory in the county’s GAA history.
On that July day in Dr Hyde Park — Mayo still bearing the scars of their heavy 5-15 to 0-10 All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Cork the previous year — got off to a great start with a goal after just 20 seconds.
Leitrim, playing in their first Connaught Final since 1967 had been tipped at the start of the year to win the provincial championship. They repaid pundits’ faith with wins over Roscommon and Galway on their way to the decider.

Leitrim appeared in their first semi-final in 67 years in August that year, taking on Dublin. Although they lost 3-15 to 1-9, the memory of that day still lives on.
