Frankel to bypass Epsom Derby

WATCH: Superstar’s blistering run to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

FOLLOWING HIS ANNIHILATION of the field in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday, Frankel’s next appearance will be at the end of June in the St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Although the three-year-old’s odds were slashed to 5/2 favourite in the wake of his six-length triumph in the season’s first classic, connections have decided not to send him to the Epsom Derby on June 4, opting instead to give him another outing at one-mile.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, trainer Sir Henry Cecil said “I think the Derby would not be doing the right thing. I’d want to give him a race before Epsom over a bit further but I can’t do that.”

“Frankel is very well, but we will take it step by step. You have to think of the horse and we don’t want to be experimenting with him.

At the moment, he is telling me not to go a mile and a half and the Prince [Khalid Abdullah, the horse's owner] agrees.

All being well, we’ll go to Ascot and then go from there.

Bookmakers have priced the horse up at odds as low as 1/3 for the race at Ascot on June 14.
