BRAZILIAN MIDFIELDER FRED failed a doping test during the Copa America, according to reports in Brazil.

The 22-year-old tested positive for the prohibited diuretic hydrochlorothiazide at the tournament in Chile.

The information was first published by Fox Sports and confirmed to ESPN Brazil by sources in the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF).

The results of a second test are due to be released on Tuesday.

Fred, who plays his club football with Shakhtar Donetsk, was not involved at the 2014 World Cup and was handed a late call-up to the Copa America squad by Dunga to replace the injured Luiz Gustavo.
