THE GOVERNMENT HAS announced a €7.4 million investment in grassroots sports.
The grants to Ireland’s three major sporting bodies – the GAA, the FAI and the IRFU — will target programmes to boost participation rates among young people.
The GAA will receive €2.4 million in Irish Sports Council funding this year while the FAI and IRFU will receive €2.7 million and €2.36 million respectively.
Over €250,000 of the money given to the FAI and the IRFU has been earmarked to support the associations’ Women in Sport programmes.
“The GAA, FAI and IRFU continue their commitment to growing the participation base of their sports,” Minster of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, said.
“This investment ensures the long-term sustainable development of the three sports in Ireland so that they continue to make a major contribution to our communities in sport and contribute to the health and well-being of the nation.
“The Government previously announced a funding package of €25 million through the Irish Sports Council strategy and these further grants continue to support grassroots participation.”
