Gary O'Neill scores on Drogheda return after battle with cancer
A pre-season friendly win saw the striker mark his comeback with the goal of the night.

DROGHEDA UNITED’S GARY O’Neill made a goalscoring return to football last night.

The 31-year-old striker came off the bench at half-time in the 5-1 friendly win over Leinster Senior League outfit Glebe North and received a warm reception from those present at Market Green before marking his comeback with a goal.

On 67 minutes, O’Neill controlled the ball with his chest and fired a dipping volley past the Glebe goalkeeper Alan O’Connor from 30 yards.

It was his first appearance for Drogs since being diagnosed with testicular cancer back in September and also Robbie Horgan’s managerial debut for the Louth club.

Having come through surgery successfully, it was announced earlier this month that O’Neill had re-signed with the Airtricity League Premier Division side as a player-coach for the upcoming season.
