Gerrard believes Torres 'regrets leaving Liverpool'

Meanwhile, the Reds captain quipped “he’ll do!” when asked about the club’s Wesley Sneijder link.

LIVERPOOL CAPTAIN STEVEN GERRARD believes Fernando Torres regrets the day that he left the Merseyside club for Chelsea.

Almost two years have passed since the 28-year-old Spaniard moved to Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £50million.

While Torres’ replacement Luis Suarez has become, along with Robin van Persie at Manchester United, the most feared striker in the Premier League, Torres has struggled for consistency at Chelsea and has recently been overshadowed by new signing Demba Ba.

Gerrard, speaking on Sky’s Goals On Sunday, admits he was distraught when Torres left Anfield and feels that events since have shown that the former Atletico Madrid skipper made the wrong decision.

“I was heartbroken when he went and I think if he’s honest, he regrets going,” Gerrard said.

“Everything at Liverpool was set up to make Fernando a success, and I’m not sure he gets that at Chelsea.

Gerrard refused, however, to acknowledge that his former team-mate had become a less threatening player in the intervening period.

“It’s not for me to say he’s lost a yard of pace, he’s had a lot of injuries and nobody knows more than I do how they can affect you.”

Gerrard also likened the decision to oust Kenny Dalglish last summer with Southampton’s sacking of manager Nigel Adkins this week.

“I think Kenny was unlucky, and maybe deserved a bit more time, but that’s what happens in football. Owners make big decisions, and you’ve seen that at Southampton this week.”

Finally, when asked about rumours that Wesley Sneijder could join Liverpool before the end of January, Gerrard quipped: “He’ll do!”
