Stage 19 of Giro d'Italia falls victim to snow

There has been no word yet on whether stage 20, which is also at risk, will go ahead.

STAGE 19 OF the Giro d’Italia has been cancelled due to heavy snowfall.

Organisers announced a modified route for the stage on Thursday to avoid the risk of riders cycling through snow and ice, but on Friday the adverse weather ensured no action would take place.

There has been no word yet on whether stage 20, which is also at risk, will go ahead.

“Due to adverse weather conditions and, in particular, snow on the stage route in its entirety, stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia, from Ponte di Legno to Val Martello/Martelltal, has been cancelled,” race officials confirmed.

Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali leads the race and is the overwhelming favourite for victory, with his nearest rival, Australian Cadel Evans, over four minutes adrift.
