HARRY REDKNAPP HAS been handed the task of saving relegation-threatened Birmingham City after he has been appointed their new manager.

Gianfranco Zola resigned yesterday at the Championship club after overseeing a terrible run of form that yielded only two wins in 22 games since taking over four months ago.

Zola had controversially replaced Gary Rowett and Birmingham City’s subsequent downturn in form sees them currently in 20th place, just three points above the relegation zone.

They lost 2-0 at home to Burton Albion yesterday and have now turned to Redknapp with three games remaining in the season, starting with next Sunday’s derby clash with Aston Villa.

Redknapp departed his most recent club managerial job in February 2015 when he left Queens Park Rangers and also took charge of the Jordan national team for a spell last year.

A statement on the club’s website revealed their delight at the announcement.

“The Club is delighted to announce that Harry Redknapp is Blues new manager. The vastly experienced Redknapp has agreed to replace Gianfranco Zola, who resigned on Monday.

“Redknapp has enjoyed notable success as a manager at AFC Bournemouth, West Ham United, Portsmouth, Tottenham Hotspur and QPR.

“Amongst his many achievements, he successfully guided Portsmouth and QPR to promotions to the Premier League and also secured an FA Cup victory with Portsmouth.

“He won a Premier League Manager of the Year award with Tottenham Hotspur and also qualified them for the Champions League.”
