SHAMROCK ROVERS HAVE stepped up their hunt for a new manager by moving to poach Stephen Kenny from title rivals Derry City.

Betting on Kenny’s appointment to the Tallaght Stadium hotseat was suspended by bookmakers yesterday when it became clear that the Hoops had identified the Dubliner as their number one target.

Kenny confirmed to BBC Radio Foyle this morning that he is in talks with Rovers after the club’s board met and decided to make a formal approach.

With a majority of their squad out of contract since the end of their Europa League campaign, Rovers are anxious to find a quick replacement for Michael O’Neill so as to allow preparations for next season’s Airtricity League title defence to begin.

Kenny was previously linked with the Rovers job in 2008 after a year in charge of SPL side Dunfermline Athletic. Despite his strong candidacy, Rovers opted to bring in O’Neill from Brechin City while Kenny returned to Derry for a second spell in charge.
