Hull City the latest English club to show interest in Dundalk winger Daryl Horgan

“He’s an intelligent football player,” said Mike Phelan. “He probably didn’t show as much as he can on Thursday night.”

HULL CITY BOSS Mike Phelan was in Tallaght Stadium on Thursday night to take in Daryl Horgan’s performance as Dundalk lost 1-0 to AZ Alkmaar.

The 1-0 defeat was Dundalk’s third straight match to lose in the Europa League and they will travel to Israel in the final group game with their future in the competition hanging in the balance.

Stephen Kenny’s side need a positive result against Maccabi Tel Aviv and are reliant on Zenit St Petersburgh getting at least a draw on their trip to AZ.

Dundalk winger Horgan, who was recently called up to the Irish squad for the first time, has been the subject of some intense speculation from cross-channel clubs.

Hull City join a list of English clubs, which includes Birmingham, Ipswich, West Ham, Sunderland and Newscastle, in being linked to the 24-year-old talent.

Phelan was in Dublin on a scouting mission as Hull mull over a move for Horgan.

“He’s a young man that’s come on the scene a little bit later than everyone expected and he’s enjoyed his football at that level now,” Phelan told the Hull Daily Mail.

“He’s played in Europe and it was important that I went to have a look after my scouts had brought him to our attention.

“He’s an intelligent football player. He probably didn’t show as much as he can on Thursday night.

“I was there to see a couple of players on show and now I’ll discuss it with my staff.”
