Ireland dominant on final day to secure second Commodores' Cup title

The Irish team have repeated their 2010 success in Cowes.

TEAM IRELAND HAS secured victory in the biennial Commodores’ Cup in Cowes, repeating the 2010 Irish success in the highly-regarded yachting event.

The Anthony O’Leary-captained team, comprising three separate boats, began the day with a strong lead, but delivered a superb performance in today’s Solent Inshore race to convincingly claim their title.

O’Leary’s Ker 39 Antix – which sails out of the Royal Cork Yacht Club – finished the final race in first position, while Michael Boyd and Niall Dowling’s Grand Soleil 43 Quokka 8 came in second and Marc Glimcher’s Ker 40 Catapult was fourth.

The net result is that Ireland, representing the Irish Cruiser Racing Association, have beaten the eight other teams involved to claim an historic second Commodores’ Cup crown. That there has been no Irish team in the competition since 2010 makes the victory all the more impressive.

Light winds played havoc with proceedings earlier in the week, but sailing conditions improved to allow the Ireland to secure their impressive win. The final standings see the Irish with a 173.5-point lead over second-placed France.

Royal Ocean Racing Club – the organisers of the Commodores’ Cup – have revealed the provisional results for each participating boat, with the three Irish competitors filling out the three top spots.

Glimcher’s Catapult had just 73 series points, with Boyd and Dowling’s Quokka 8 on 97 and O’Leary’s Antix completing the eight-race competition on 98. All 31 sailors involved in the Irish challenge deserve major credit for their efforts in Cowes.

Hat-tips: Gary Cullen and Joe Conway.
