Ireland off to a winning start in Baku

Belfast flyweight Michael Conlon is safely through to the last 32 at the AIBA World Championships.

BELFAST FLYWEIGHT MICHAEL CONLON booked his place in the last 32 of the AIBA World Championships with a commanding performance in Baku this afternoon.

The 19-year-old was the first Irish fighter to step into the ring at this year’s Championship and he scored a convincing victory over European bronze medallist Alexandr Riscan, winning 25-12.

Conlon took an early lead against his Moldovan opponent, winning the first round 9-4 before stretching his advantage in the second and final rounds.

Next up for the St John Bosco BC teen is Olzhas Sattibayev of Kazakhstan who recorded a 14-7 points decision over Morocco’s Abdelafateh Nafil to set up Sunday’s meeting.
