BELFAST FLYWEIGHT MICHAEL CONLON booked his place in the last 32 of the AIBA World Championships with a commanding performance in Baku this afternoon.

The 19-year-old was the first Irish fighter to step into the ring at this year’s Championship and he scored a convincing victory over European bronze medallist Alexandr Riscan, winning 25-12.

Conlon took an early lead against his Moldovan opponent, winning the first round 9-4 before stretching his advantage in the second and final rounds.

Next up for the St John Bosco BC teen is Olzhas Sattibayev of Kazakhstan who recorded a 14-7 points decision over Morocco’s Abdelafateh Nafil to set up Sunday’s meeting.
