Irish Eye: Doyle saves McCarthy's blushes, for now

Once again, we’ve travelled around the grounds in England and Scotland. Here’s our report card on the Irish lads in action.

Premier League

Kevin Doyle (Wolves 2-2 Swansea) Most of the Molineux “faithful” had thrown in the towel by the time Doyle struck in the 84th minute to spark a late revival. The Wexford man pounced from close range to turn home Sam Vokes’ saved shot and then, two minutes later, broke free of the Swansea defence and squared to Jamie O’Hara for the equaliser.

Npower Championship

Andy Keogh & Darren O’Dea (Peterborough Utd 2-3 Leeds Utd)

Darren O’Dea won all three points for Leeds on Saturday with a snatch-and-grab in the fifth minute of injury time. The defender, who Posh fans felt was lucky to still be on the pitch, flicked Adam Clayton’s free in off the underside of the crossbar deep into stoppage time.

Earlier, loan signing Andy Keogh put Leeds one-nil up in the fourth minute with a powerful volley.

Joe Mason (Cardiff City 5-3 Barnsley) Irish U21 Joe Mason capped a fine all-round performance with an instinctive finish in the 35th minute, nipping in to score Cardiff’s second after Peter Whittingham’s free-kick was parried.

Paddy McCarthy (Ipswich 0-1 Crystal Palace) Palace skipper Paddy McCarthy scored the only goal of the game at Portman Road, getting on the end of Sean Scannell’s whipped cross to toe-poke home.

David Forde (Leicester City 0-3 Millwall) Ex-Derry City man David Forde kept his fourth clean sheet of the season on Saturday, as Millwall picked up their first win on the road this term thanks to a Darius Henderson hat-trick.

Scottish Premier League

Darren Randolph (Motherwell 0-0 Kilmarnock) Randolph helped maintain Motherwell’s mean defensive reputation on Saturday, holding Killie at bay with his seventh clean sheet of the season.
