GALWAY HURLING STAR Joe Canning will dash to Tipperary after tomorrow’s Leinster SHC semi-final against Laois in Tullamore.
The Portumna superstar has been named at full-forward for the O’Connor Park clash and will then travel to Cashel for ‘The Longest Day hurling tournament‘, which features 16 teams in a unique 5-a-side-competition.
The competing teams will be split initially into four groups of four for a competition that will run from dusk until dawn.
It gets underway at Leahy Park, home of local club Cashel King Cormacs, and the finals will be played under the shadow of the world-famous Rock of Cashel.
Canning will be present for the concluding stages and to hand out trophies to the winners.
The Tribes hitman has also picked the sensational 5-a-side team that he would like to feature in.
Canning named ten-time All-Ireland SHC medallist Henry Shefflin, Kilkenny’s Richie Hogan, Galway teammate Cathal Mannion and The42′s Brendan Cummins in his fantasy 5-a-side line-up.
I’ll take my chance to play on the same team as Henry Shefflin without a doubt. Then I’d go for Richie Hogan because his skill will be needed, Cathal Mannion has that skill as well and a good brain so will be able to keep us in shape.
“Then for in goals I’m going to pull Brendan Cummins out of retirement. That’s a team I’d be happy to play until sunset with.”
‘The Longest Day’ will pay homage to the Celtic festival celebrated on the eve of the summer solstice, and looks set to be a huge hit.
Bonfires will replace floodlights as the remaining teams battle it out for glory.
