Jonathan Woodgate joins Liverpool as a scout ahead of the new season

The move could be bad news for Southampton’s bank manager.

FORMER ENGLAND DEFENDER Jonathan Woodgate is to join Liverpool’s scouting team, focusing on players operating in continental Europe.

Woodgate, who was released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season, as his hometown club secured promotion to the Premier League, is expected to track players playing in Spain and Portugal.

The 36-year-old previously spent time as a player in Spain with Real Madrid, but his time with Los Blancos was dogged by injuries, which resulted in Woodgate making only nine league appearances in his three years with the club.

Liverpool have brought in several players from the Iberian Peninsula in recent seasons, including Iago Aspas, Lazar Markovic, Aly Cissokho and Alberto Moreno, who have all had varying degrees of success at Anfield.
