Teenager reunites Jordi Murphy with his lost Six Nations medal

The Leinster and Ireland flanker gave young Stephen Murphy his hoodie but forgot to remove its precious, medal-shaped cargo.

JORDI MURPHY MADE one young rugby fan’s day at Dublin Airport, last Sunday, as he handed him a his Leinster hoodie as a memento. The Leinster and Ireland flanker had recognised 13-year-old Stephen Murphy from a previous meeting, after a league game, and was happy to part with the merchandise.

However, the flanker, who appeared in two of Ireland’s final three Six Nations matches, forgot to check his pockets before handing over the training hoodie. As the Ireland team bus pulled off, the tennager tried on his new gear and found a shiny Six Nations medal inside.

Stephen Murphy’s father, Ciarán, was on Newstalk this morning and recounted the tale to Breakfast Show host Ivan Yates. “[Stephen] tried on the jersey and said ‘Dad, I think there’s money in the pocket’. He reached in and there was the gold, RBS Six Nations medal. It was fantastic, the excitement.”

After briefly considering going Gollum and pouching the precious trinket, Murphy junior and senior opted to follow the team bus to the Four Seasons hotel to reunite the flanker with his medal. There was a diversion, to Glasnevin, to see Stephen’s 84-year-old ‘Nana’ and take a quite unique and brilliant picture with the medal around her neck. “That’s worth a million dollars,” remarked Murphy Sr.

Upon reaching the team hotel, the Murphys found their namesake, who was ‘so thrilled’ to get his lost property back. The Ireland forward took another snap with the young “hero” and tweeted out his thanks later that day.

A happy ending to a superb story. We wonder how Murphy was so forgetful last Sunday?
