Benzema signs new Real Madrid deal with a reported €1 billion buyout clause

The Frenchman is extending his stay with the European champions until the summer of 2021.

KARIM BENZEMA HAS become the latest Real Madrid star to sign a new bumper four-year contract with the European champions, the club announced today.

“Real Madrid and Benzema have agreed to extend the contract of the player, who will remain tied to the club until June 30, 2021,” Madrid said in a statement.

The French striker, 29, has won two La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, two Copa del Reys, two Fifa Club World Cups and three Uefa Super Cups since joining from Lyon in 2009.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, his buyout clause has been fixed at a whopping €1 billion.

Vice-captain Marcelo, Isco and Dani Carvajal all extended to 2022 over the past week as Real reward key members of the squad that became the first side to retain the Champions League trophy in June.

Benzema has been struggling with a hamstring injury and is not included in Madrid’s squad to face Real Betis this evening.
